    Coplanar faces?
    0 height box?
    0 extrusion?

Just a rectangle with edit mesh, a box and a sphere!!!

Make sure the box has some thickness to it. not 0
        Thats probably the reason

I'm getting a very similar problem

The object has a water texture (which needs a little more work, i know) but it is just a tube object w/ slice, no modifiers. Any ideas?

Yes....... don't use a tube with a slice modifier. Why dont you create a plane or a box (NOT 0 thickness) with lots of faces for some ripples and then boolean it from a cylinder. So you end up with a nice renderable circular mesh to apply all the material and modifier goodness you want. Well, thats what i would do anyhow.....

well, it does have a thickness (18' to be precise) but I'll try making it as a mesh and see if it solves the problem

I rebuilt the object as booleans then collapsed to poly as suggested instead of as a tube....but it still generates the same problem.

try to lower the bottom of the water mesh, to behind of the bottom of the pool, it should solve this and keep the good looking refractions
