Question about 3dsmax R3

I'm sure there are enough Vray users who have no plans on moving to Max 6 simply because it doesn't do enough for them to justify the upgrade cost. It seems software industry (appart from Vray) has been in this mass production mode for a while now, where a major new version has to be released every 6 months, even though it doesn't offer any significantly new features. Take a look at Photoshop, or even worse Macromedia Flash.
A lot of companies are turning to "subscription" schemes, offering upgrades and bug fixes to customers on such plans for the time period, but who's real purpose is to guarantee a cash flow. For many people, this is all going too fast for not enough benefit.
As for Vray, if keeping up with various versions becomes a problem, then I would say it is time to move to standalone version. I imagine it would probably be easier to keep up with the backward file import compatibility, than with complete programs for different Max versions.
This will also open up new markets, if connection with other 3d platforms is made. Things can only get better for Vray from there.

With all that being said at least users of older versions of MAX are being
considered. Most companies just stop supporting older products and leave
you cold. As for the rest, I knew what I was buying and have not experienced
any smoke and mirrors with Chaos, yet. Vlado has always been staight
and clear helping when help was needed and considering update requests
no matter how strange. I think it is a nice change to be so close to the
software developer in terms of feedback from the users. We are a voice
in the development. I have yet to see a finished version of anything
though it might be released as such.
VRay meets my needs, of course things here and there could be
improved but it works for me. I am aware of the gotcha's and for the
cost, quality and speed VRay is still the winners here.
No intent to offend, just my .02"It's the rebels sir....They're here..."

I never said we are going to discontinue support for older 3dsmax version. On the contrary - after seeing the replies in this thread, we will certainly continue doing so. I was merely interested to read your opinions
Best regards,
VladoI only act like I know everything, Rogers.

RErender, your right again, lots of opinions.
Vlado, thank you for the quick clarification. But when you as the developer, used a the phrase "we could drop...", one can hardly view that as posistive. That continued support is planned, is very good news and is very posistive. And like most, I understand there is no forever regarding upgrades or anything else for that matter.
Anyway, least now I can exhale - and keep working with the only software i'm very passionate about other than pshop- VRay!

I plan to move it up to max5 (on the shelf) or maybe even max6 (just got it in) when ever i have a gap of a week or so in my agenda...- Geert -
