  • VRayDomeEnv texture

As requested in this thread: http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbu...re-environment

I coded a small environment map plugin for dome environment mapping, which you can find here: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/misc/

And some results with a few HDRI's from aversis.be:

I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

          smart and useful tool !!

Using by the texture of VRayDomeLight is not recommended?
It seems that the case of an environment texture is different from a behavior.

            This looks really cool!

Can this kind of projection be realized through geometry? Right now I quite often use a normal-flipped sphere as a background panorama, but of course this doesn't allow the actual ground of the panoramic photo to be used with a moving camera... is there a mathematically correct way to distort the bottom half of the sphere, or is this distortion depending on the camera position (and thus changing all the time with a moving cam)?

Thanks Vlado - that will be super useful. It would be great to have it as an optional mode for VrayDome lights. Is that doable?

It is ok to use it for hemispheric dome lights, as the texture map is the same above the horizon as the original environment map.

You can use the VRayDomeEnv texture with a moving camera, as the projection is locked to a specific point in space which you can control, rather than to the camera position. You would need quite high-resolution textures if go to too far away from the center point though.

It can be done, but I'm not sure it's the best place for it. For the moment, I'm planning to just move this as a new mapping mode in VRayHDRI for the next service pack.

                        Makes sense.

Of course, now I want it in RT!

That makes a lot of sense, then it can be used wherever. Thanks!

Really cool thing. It's just very sharp on the horizon. This will result in ugly abrupt stretches when there are objects near to the "camera". Could we have a little more soft transition there? Rounded edge or something.
