    Hey Java -
Like John said - you'll find it in the Maps rollout of the Material Editor. Just a note though: it's not showing up in RT just yet, but it does overlap with the functionality of HDRLS.

I really like the softbox map. Very handy indeed.
It would be nice if it could work on non-rectangular shapes. Is that possible?

Aaah yes, I realise its a map, I found it, I was expecting to see in Vrays rollout not 3dsmax's standard rollout.

For sure - I do that all the time. The maps are based on Gradient Ramps so they work on any shape. I often used octagonal poly's to create umbrella type reflections, disc shapes are common for me too, and very often I start with a rectangular polygon and do a ton of vertex moving to craft a custom shape. Just add the shader to a VrayLightMaterial and you are off and running with whatever shape you want. You can expand the options by adjusting the UV's as well.

wouldn't it make more sense to have stuff enabled by default in the softbox? Everything seems to be off by default, so when you add it to a light, you still have to enable some parts, kinda like an extra step.

I guess it depends on your point of view. In many cases you might only use one layer (say to add a radial vignette) then would have to go through and turn it all off. Anyway, you can always make one set up however you like and save it to your material library and just load it up when you need it.

Another plus. If you set the base color to black, you've got a circular vraylight

Yep, and if you use the Directional parameter of the Vraylight you have a round spotlight

If you turn on tiling for the hotspot layer and set the repeat values to >1 you can also easily create banks of round lights with single Vraylights.

Doesn't seem to be supported yet - which is a bit of a drag for sure. Bear in mind that it ended up being released ahead of schedule though....

                          Great tips Brett!

Kelvin controlled coloring would be a nice feature too.

                            good to know,

but here it seems to work only with a vraysoftbox tex inside a vraylight material, not inside a vraylight, is it correct?

No, the shader should work in a VrayLight too. You are just limited to the shapes available to a vraylight - unless you use a mesh light, but that's not something I really do since the vraylightmaterial generates direct light now too.

thanks, I forgot to mention I was just trying with a mesh light ...switching to mtl works as expected
