  • Shade MAP - Correct usage

    HI,

    The shademap in stereoscopic helper is so awesome at getting super fast yet properly raytraced DOF & Mblur that I can't believe it's not part of the main Vray Globals yet.
    Anyway the there are a couple of things that seem unclear about it from the limited documentation
    Please excuse if some of these questions have already been asked. I have already searched the forums & help files but couldn't find concrete answers to certain questions.
    I'll keep it brief--

    1. Should GI prepass be done at the same time as Creating the shade map or is it OK to use a precalculated one when Creating the shade map?

    2. Is it OK to use Distributed Rendering when Creating the Shade map.

    3. Should anti-alias [including any filters] be on or OFF when Creating the shade map

      It is ok to use precalculated GI.

      2. Is it OK to use Distributed Rendering when Creating the Shade map.
      For the moment, unfortunately - no. We are working on this and it will be implemented.

      3. Should anti-alias [including any filters] be on or OFF when Creating the shade map
      The stereoscopic helper will turn the AA filter off automatically when creating the shade map.

        The shade map is absolutely awesome for DOF & Mblur....it a great addition!

        PS. Will the shademap stay in stereo helper in future versions?? Or will it end up in the globals eventually?

              thanks pixela, that's pretty much what I've been trying, but every time I specify where to save the shade map and render, it crashes right at the end of the render with an UNHANDLED EXCEPTION error. Anyone know why?

                Hm, are you sure the file is writable? Also, which 3ds Max version?

                  I tried to save in several different locations in case that was the problem. Max 2011 crashes........ just tried 2013 - it worked (i think) but the file it saved was called "鈐" when it should have been saved as "1.vrst"

                  I'm probably just doing something wrong, but can send you the max file if you want, its just a bunch of teapots

                    Could you inform us which version of vray are you using for Max 2013 ? We have a bug causing this wrong naming in the earlier builds which is already fixed.
                    Please download one of the last builds and it should work correct!

                      Hi Svetlozar, I just downloaded the latest version from chaosgroup and installed to be sure I had the latest one: same problem.

                      could you outline a simple step by step for me so i can check that its all working as it should?

                        Have you downloaded the latest Nightly Build (http://nightlies.chaosgroup.com) - or latest official build (http://www.chaosgroup.com/en/2/downloads.html)
                        Please download Nightly Build , not official build !

                          I've come across UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: Preparing camera ray sampler Last ..... when rendering from shade map file.

                          Is this what you found ?
                          If it was that easy, it would have already been done
