Workstation build advice

Hi,
I need help with building a workstation....
I cannot decide performance wise
Either single P4 @ 3.2 HT
or dual Athlon 3.4
also....how many gigs of RAM would doit....I was thinking of 2GB...is that enough?
I really need fast system....I would appreciate your advice.

Hi,

in order to answer to this neverending question, it'd be usefull to know what you plan to do with.

For example.
A dual AMD will be stable and smooth to use if you switch between apps, but quite noisy for a multipurpose home computer (watching movies?).
The same with HDs (10.000rpm Satas are top notch but noisy).
Concernign the memory, if you plan to do 3d (as I gues ) you'll need at least 1gig of ram (ECC registered for Dual motherboards) if you render on this system (without bitmap pager for example).

etc, etc... Not so obvious in fact.

I plan to use it for arch/viz renderings.....

I idea was:
P4 3.06 HT on 875 chipset
2gb RAM 400Mhz CL2 (KIT 2x1024)
ATI RADEON 9800 XT 256MB RAM
