  • saving gamma

Wanted to ask this for a while now.

I've been using the gamma workflow for a while now. I render float and save to .exr. My output gamma is set to 2.2 globally. I do not burn the 2.2 gamma curve, instead i use it just to reduce the noise, so it's always set to "don't affect output" or whatever it is within the color correction menu.

Now, when i save a diffuse channel, or a multimatte channel i just leave it at default and it saves with 2.2 and looks correct. If i save the .exr with the same setting they are washed out. If i override with 1.0 they look correct. Am i doing something wrong here? Because this makes it really hard to automatically output all the channels. On top of that, i save the multimatte and alpha as pngs. How do you guys do this?

        Yeah,

I've got on board with the 2.2 gamma about 6-7 years ago, but i never ever got the LWF thing. I think i've mentioned it a few times, hardly anyone uses the real LWF because it involves working with images in linear mode. In layman terms, if you blur a linear image (the dark saturated one) and then correct it, it will look different than bluring the corrected one.

Anyway, my question is still there, if you save EXRs, how do you save the filters and multimatte channels?

If you are not doing any composting after rendering and you want to use LWF for reducing noise I would suggest first approach:
          a) If you are not using compositing in your workflow the setup for LWF with Vray will be :
          - Max Gamma - OFF
          - Linear Multiply
          - Dark/Bright Multiplier = 1
          - Vray Gamma - 2.2
          - Don't Affect Colors - OFF
          -Linear Worflow - ON
          - sRGB Button - OFF
          - NOTE - every 16/32 bit image won't be gamma corrected.

In general - this workflow will convert all 8bit images to be Linear applying "inverse gamma 0.454" - all swatches color will be converted to linear - and at the end Vray will apply back the gamma curve to your final image !
With this workflow you should get proper render elements as well.
          Best regards,

Ok, this really annoys me. I've been using LWF for years, but this method actually seems to make the maps render as they look in the Material Editor when the Material Editor has gamma correction applied, BUT it also doesn't allow the Material Editor to have gamma correction applied.

I hope posting these isn't wrong. They were shares from last months 3D Magazine (they are well branded). I didn't learn anything new from them, but they are good, and they do simplify the explanation. Although they are well done, I have heard this explained in a dozen of different ways so, these might bring debate.
