how long should DOF add to your render times? I am using the default 8 subdivisions, but it seems to be a huge hit. With DOF I am seeing 20hrs, and without, I am seeing 6hrs render times.

With all of the unified sampling stuff it shouldn't add massively since it should be turning down the samples of other parts in your render. Maybe have a look at the shade map discussion? It seems to have pretty big impacts on render times, especially for stills!

I have some success using PS's lens blur, using the zdepth channel, but it's not as nice. Of coarse, it's faster, but it doesn't look as good. Other than PS, what would you suggest trying?Bobby Parker

my shaders aren't changing. When I render with dof on, it's 20 hours and off, it's 10 hours. Nothing, other than DOF, is being changed.Originally posted by joconnell View PostWith all of the unified sampling stuff it shouldn't add massively since it should be turning down the samples of other parts in your render. I had that, but I didn't really use it. I got it to animate the DOF, but I never figured it out. I'll check it out againOriginally posted by cubiclegangster View PostDOF pro is the only one worth using imo.Bobby Parker

Righty - maybe try massively upping the dof subdivs? Try doing a single bucket with your current settings, then try using 25, 50 and 100 subdivs on your dof. You might be able to reduce a lot of subdivs of other parts of the image with everything being blurred instead.

gotcha! I'll give it a go.Originally posted by joconnell View PostRighty - maybe try massively upping the dof subdivs? Lenscare and DOF Pro are both excellent, but neither is really the same thing as in-camera DOF. For a lot of stuff you can get away with it, but for really hi-res or high detail I find too many edge artifacts show up, and there's always oddness with refractive objects and fuzzy edges etc.
For me it's worth living with the render time hit 99% of the time. I really like both those filters for adding blur to photographs though

Very slow rendering raytraced DOF has more to do with how much overlapping geometry there is, than anything else.
The more overlapping geometry the more the renderer becomes exponentially slower. Same with Raytraced Mblur
The new SHADEMAP [in the Vray steroscopic helper] is able to solve this problem of slow DOF FOREVER ...
---- if you use the shademap, Vray DOF is now SOOOOOO fast it's unbelieveable
Give it a go Bobby & you will never look back!
There is plenty threads on the forum as to how to use it.
Cheers
jamie
PS.. you can also use the Shademap threashold at 100 [rather than default 1] and get DOF renders so fast & clean you will instantly smile.
