  • question on reflect/refract depth How much

    Maybe natty could help me

To ge t correct metal reflection of object behind glass have I to increase the depth value of reflect or refract or together ?

How can I understand how much have to increase it?

    bye and thanks in advance

To Natty the scene is similar to your I'm drawing a stair with glass and iron

bye and thanks and excuse my bad english

it all depends on the scene. There is no magical number, start @ 5 and render, if you need more go up 2 at a time and render.

yeah i agree with DaForce there is no magic number....but i start with these values : glass = Colour = Black, Refract: Grey 230, Reflect: grey 50, IOR: 1.4

Metal = Colour Grey 183, Reflact colour Grey 120, Glossiness 0.7 Subds 10..... dont use Interpolation it tends to blur behind glass..

well these are my very basic settings that i tend to play with ..

          thanks for the replies

I'll try but with this scene is complicated to test is to sloww to render

          bye and thanks in advance

          To Natty:

Wich parameters of depth did u use for your stair scene?

          Maybe it could help me

          bye and thanks again

              This illustration may help...

The yellow represents the most basic path.

The red line is where you should be concerned about reflections back and forth and this is where it can really add up. If you have a reflective/ refractive material on the other side of the internal reflective object you'll need to consider that also.

J_Bug's illustration is exactly how I figure reflect / refract depth. Just to clarify it a little.. The 1-2 and 4-5 are the object itself, not the faces. Unless you have reflect on backside on, it won't reflect the backside of faces. Which as I understand it won't affect the count anyway.
