  • Velocity Pass: After Effects, Fusion, Nuke

    Yehaa my friends of Vray,

once again... I was reading a lot about the velocity pass, how to set it up and how to use it in multiple compositing software packages and plugins.

I thought it might be beneficial if we write all the settings and experiences in one thread !

I try to get started. Of course, within 3dsmax.

After Effects & Reel Smart Motion Blur:

    1. I kept all settings at the standard settings
    2. Loaded the rendered footage into AE
    3. But I realized, I had to use 32bit.exr files
    4. Set the Project Settings to Floating 32bit
    5. Use the ExtracoR to shuffle out the Velocity Pass
    6. Effects-3D Channel-ExtractoR
    7. Set inside the Reel Smart MB Vector Plugin the Layer you have pulled the Velocity Pass
    8. Adjust the settings
    9. Done

That's been said, I did not change anything about the standard vray velocity settings and it worked for me.

So if you would like to add something, please feel free.
Would be great to continue on the Nuke & Fusion settings.

    cheers,
    Bernhard

Nuke is really simple. Add the velocity element in vray and turn off clamp output, save to an exr. In nuke, add a vectorblur element, set your channels to the vray velocity element, set the method to forwards and make sure to pick your alpha channel too or you'll get this weird doubling effect of a sharp copy of the render mixed over a blurred copy. The multiplier is equivalent to your motion blur amount so 1.0 in nuke = 1 frame of motion blur = 360 degree shutter motion blur on a film camera, 0.5 is your standard half frame motion blur or a 180 degree shutter.

    No idea on fusion.

I use the velocity channel in Fusion and it does a great job.
Mostly I use the "Motiondepthblur" node which is part of the Awake plugin pack from Frantic Films (RIP) alternatively I use the RSMB plugin if I am not adding DOF.
It is very important to take note of the "max velocity" in the VRayVelocity render element. Once you know this number (by doing a test frame) you plug that number in to the "velocity scale" and its all done.

If anyone wants a sample scene max/fusion I can put something together and share it.

Also heard from our lead comper on the last film that reelsmart does a more natural looking job than the in built vector blur in nuke - might be worth keeping in mind since it's cheap.

Any tips on using ExtractoR w/o Reelsmart in AE? what should the blue channel be set to, the Z? I've been using vector blur.
