  • hell, i would like to know this setup 4 weeks before. i am not that far away - i went up to 50 in material, with 4 up to 6 as multiplikator and low IR settings.

by looking into direct lightsources and in combination with high reflecting surfaces around i even could not give BF a try.

By Studying the GGX brdf, I've managed to simulate the "bloomed highlight" effect seen on those slick chromes with the added bonus of being able to use seperate maps for the base and top layer.
      Pics or it didn't happen.

here is a challenge up to your talent.
Antics glass, the first one create.
You should see that one in a museum to catch the beauty and how intriguing this material is.
the fusion was not controlled enough and it finally look like a mix of :
transparent part bluish or greenish, not so shiny
        Opaque part mat
        iridescent shimmering on some part
        Nacre on other
.... I can stand for hours in front of such pieces, and nowadays, there is no more master able to reproduced it anymore, even not in Verona!
I cannot afford to get a real antic one, so maybe I could get a nice render out of it instead.

        • Grant,

I'm not sure if this would qualify as it would heavily rely on displacements but a nice powdery snow setup would be great.

          Cheers

            • Hopefully once we've all been prepped in Grant's masterful way of rendering & material creation, we can all take own jabs at creating these materials everyone suggests.

              • All this talk flies in the face of almost everything you read elsewhere. Things like SolidRock and scene optimising scripts work just the opposite, which is what causes the confusion. I am going to try with high material subdivisions, and see what happens. If I get better render times with a better quality render, then I'll be a fan-boy.

Even with my half-understood half-arsed approach Ive seen some huge improvements using high subdivisions compared to everything at 8.
Still don't understand enough to really use it properly though

I'm in the process of writing an in-depth tutorial on the subject... so hopefully it'll help clear up this whole mess once it's done.

                    • How relevant are those GNOMON Workshop videos that some of us got when we ordered V-Ray? I just unearthed mine and I plan on watching them again this weekend. I haven't watched them, since I got them, and that was 4-5 years ago. Then, it didn't make much sense, but now that I know more I might appreciate them. Or, has the technology evolved and are they no longer relevant?

thanks, but more I read more I'm getting lost. It's like fishing. You believed the catch can't be lost and bloom, finally catch nothing, fish is gone.

                          • Well, I dropped my model (an interior space) into Grant's scene, increased all my materials across the board to 256 subdivisions, and I hit render. I know, that's not the point, but I am going to see what happens. I was getting clean renders using IRR/LC and subdivisions of 8+. My render times were around 5hrs, which are typical for me. So far, using Grant's settings, it has been rendering for 1:38 and has 11:37 to go. It is looking a little grainy when I zoom in.

                            • I do have the sample rate element, and it is 100% blue, which I usually see mostly red.

light samples also need to be higher, 128 - 256
