  • vray vs scanline ?

I was wondering if I were to do a rendering without using GI, using vray is still better and faster than the scanline renderer of 3DSMAX ? is it a wise choice to use vray over the standard 3dsmax renderer ? is it really faster ?

    thx for your comments ...

It will be faster in some cases, mainly with lots of reflections, it is most beneficial when doing things scanline can't like 3d motion blur, real dof or displacement.

Reflections and refractions have always blown the standard scanline away in speed and quality for any tests I've done.

But in vray you might miss 2 important features (mainly for post production) of the scanliner: render elements and the multi-layered G-Buffer.

cocolas, that's a limitation of the VRay material, not the renderer

                  the strange thing is,
i bought vray because of its GI features.
now i dont use GI anymore,
but still vray on every project.

                  if i start something new,
the first thing that i do is change the renderer.

the best thing are those super-fast vray shadows.
second for me is raytrace reflection.

stuff i dont use anymore is:
motion blur- sloooooow (use max render effect)
                  Dof- slow (done in post)
GI- flicker in animation or high rendertime (i always have animated objects)
                  displacement- flicker in animation
"Make Art" button- who needs art?
                  Reflect, repent and reboot.
                  Order shall return.
