  • Use Dirtmap as Bumpmap

Hi I tried to use dirtmap in the bumpmap slot, but without any effect.

Is there anything I am doing wrong, or is it just not possible?

    best

    rog!

What do you expect to happen there? Currently it works by blending the bump results from the two sub-textures (occluded and unoccluded).

    Best regards,

could you explain that more in deep?
I need some bumps made by stiches on a leathered surface. Think about a carseat made of leather and the stiches are modeled, I need to render closeups where you can see the bump in the leather made by the stiches I thought the best would be with an ao bump made from dirtmap. I tried to use distance map and dirt map, but neither one had success.

      best

      rog.

You could try unwrapping it, rendering out the AO map seperately, then using that as a bumpmap?

You'll probably need to Texture Bake the Dirt map into separate bitmaps, then those should work as a bump. Sucks I know.

Ideally the dark part of the dirt map should bump in and the white part should bump out without the need for sub textures. I understand technically why this doesn't happen, but from an artistic standpoint this would be super useful.

isnt this actually the case where you can perfectly use vray distance texture and instance it to the displacement mod or slot?

I dont want to use displacement, I need the bump map and I already tried to use distance map, but no success with it. Same as with dirtmap.

In mr there you can use materials as maps, if this would be possible with vray, I would find a solution, maybe with ink and paint as a converted map or so.... I will test further. If I find a solutiin I post it, thanks.

DirtMap and DistanceTexture could be both used in order to generate Bump-Effect but they must be first plugged into VrayColor2Bump or VrayNormalBump nodes.

In the example above I have used VrayColor2Bump + OutputMap to gain more control to the final effect via Color Map/Curve function.

It works with gradient mapping too. I think I have a semi.

Yeah, that's pretty cool. Is there a way to make that work with displacement? Would be cool not to have to bake out maps to do displacement in a similar way.

Vertex colours also works, so does the Warp texture. Very cool. Thank you vray!

When I load the file with VRay 2.4 it asks for the vrayoptionre2013.dlv file and the dirt example does not work. Do I need the Beta for this?
