  • Vraylight: Exclude/Include for materials instead of objects?

    Hi everyone,

Often in product shots the photographer would shoot different kind of lighting setups according to the materials on the product.
One product could have a metallic coating over some part of the matt painting and so with one lighting setup only you wouldnt be able to show the difference of the materials in an aesthetically pleasing way.
So you shoot two, three or how much you need of lighting setups (hard lighting, soft lighting, lighting from top, lighting from the side...) and then compose it later.

Of course one could do that in 3D too, but I would prefer a one-shot setup.

Is it possible to have one light only effect one certain material and exclude the other?
That way I could light everything at the same time.
I thought maybe the MtlWrapper or MtlOverwrite could do it but I cant find a way.

Any suggestions are appreciated a lot!

    Thank you!

    Manuel

    Hi,

Probably the 3DS Max feature State Set will allow you to create different lighting setups for single scene.
You can record three or more lighting setups of your scene and load them according your needs.

The Light include/exclude list works only for objects.

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion. But as I said, I do not want different lighting setups and render them separately but all at ones in one render. Just one setup would be for a different material. I guess that's not possible in any way?

        Hi,

Unfortunately this is not possible in that way, thought.
Maybe you could try to divide your geometry depending on the materials (if possible at all) and use the lights include exclude parameter.
Another approach that could be useful in this case is to add few material select render elements with different glossy values. Actually i'm not sure if this can make the things easier but its just a suggestion.

          Hi,

          thanks again./
Its not possible to divide the geometry - the map is too detailed and small. the separating work would be overkill.

how would I go about using Material select? I thought it is just used to solely render out one material that is used in the scene... I would still need several renderings for my goal, right?

btw, is such a feature planned for future vray releases (material include/exclude for the lights)? it would be so useful! certainly coding wise it is possible, right?!

            Hi.
It would be a good feature.
Moreover, I'd like to see that implemented in VrayDistanceTex, VRayDirt and VRayToon as well

Usually yes, but here is one workflow that might helps you.

Im not sure about this and I have to check.

Would it be possible to share more details about this request. Is there any specific workflow where these options are required?

Would you be so kind to share the scene with me?
I dont really understand that screenshot fully.

                Thanks very much!

                    Hi,

                    thank you for the scene!
Very cool idea on how to use the MtlSelect.
Of course the different lighting setup for the metal part would also be existant in the matt material. There might be a bright diffused spotlight on that place then - inconvenient.
Maybe one could place light for the metal part and dial it way down and use it later with Lightselect to comp it in again.

Do you want me to start a thread again for this in the wishlist or maybe write another email somewhere?
Because I would really love to have such a feature in a future release.

We made a new feature request about Exclude/Include a light for e certain materials instead of just objects.
Unfortunately we are not able to give any time-frames for its implementation.

If you would like to make another feature-requests please use Wishlist-section of our forum:

I personally had no idea there was such a request (which has no bearing on its development, thankfully.)!
Is anyone aware of any renderer which can do this?
There are a ton of doubts in my head as to how one such approach would work, or not, and i'd be oh-so-curious to see it at work and get a better idea.
