  • VRAY 3.0 Elevator Pitch

So, if I was to sell the upgrade to my boss, what can I say? How will the upgrade fee pay for itself (ROI).

All of your renders get faster by probably a minimum of 10% so that means either more work done in the same time, or more tweaks so higher quality in the same time. With the render nodes if you've been using Brute force at all, it gets 3 - 5 times quicker, all other render get 10% quicker at a minimum. You could use less render nodes and have the same power, or just get more done quicker.

Hah, my thoughts exactly. I know I want VRay 3, I know I need some of the features (speed increase, clipping, etc) - but convincing somebody else that dropping 2k for an upgrade is worth it is a challenge.

        Cache nothing. Brute force everything.

Vray 3.0, for character work it is easy to pitch, in contrast, for architectural work when you do a lot of non brute force it will be harder to defend, right?

Why I think vray 3 is better than vray 2.

            1. Vlado + chaos army + forum
            2. Longer support and more active
            3. More color correction nodes for render
            4. Faster brute force render
            5. More user friendly
            6. Univied vmat shaders - u can move all of ur projects straight to maya and back.
            7. Progressive sampler - big speed up
            8. Progressive based RT CPU = one of biggest features so far - u actually get to use fog and more complex set ups with RT !
            9. Render passes from gpu/cpu = u can actually use ur GPU for production !
            10. And more more more more...

Me, being an archviz person, there is nothing in this release that would make me want to accept the rendernodes issue and hefty upgrade price. Maybe Vray 4.0 will have something to attract archviz people again.

But, isn't 2.4 being dropped in 6 months, or did I miss understand? For me, speed is important, but all the new tutorials will be for 3.0, so I'll want to keep up.

Yes 2.4 is being dropped. If u dont want to lose 2.4 buy new license instead of upgrade.

                    It's not being 'dropped'.
If you buy vray 3.0 you can still use 2.4 and stagger your upgrade over 6 months - because the licenses work very differently ordinarily you'd have to swap them over from one to the other. this is unrealistic to expect a studio to do overnight so you're given 6 months to do it in your own time. You basically keep your old licenses for 6 months while also having your new 3.0 licenses.
1.5 to 2.0 didnt have this because the license setup was similar between versions.

This has been explained over and over since the announcement of 3.0 across 15 threads.

So, if I never want to upgrade 2.4, 2.4 will always work for me?

Yes, it will. Even autodesk dont break old versions when a new one comes out.

Yeah, right now I'm actually using all 10 render nodes. So how much more expensive is it? Fine I get my 1 copy for free with 2 nodes. And how much do 8 extra nodes cost? That's a pretty difficult sell. Well, I could technically eliminate 1 node because it's 10% faster right? So I need to buy 7 nodes.
How do I justify that cost?

I just looked at the cost. It looks like 1960usd for 7 more nodes. Or I could just go with another workstation copy for someone else to use, plus 5, for 2080, which is a lot more cost effective. Renting nodes is a minimum of 800usd/month because it starts at quantity 10. Well, that's a pretty impossible sell. Renting is only a 50% discount from what you pay to get a permanent copy.

Has anyone here tried renting Boxx machines? I hear they rent those will licensed software. I wonder how the pricing compares. It might be worth doing that instead. Our machines here aren't all that new either, which is why I don't charge for render time.
