I am not really into the licensing stuffs, but according to http://www.chaosgroup.com/en/2/UpgradeCalculator.html if you have VRay 2, upgrading to 3.0 with 10 render nodes costs 970USD.

yeah, I'm product viz, and we aren't big. So I don't think I can justify the upgrade either. Also, 6months of overlap isn't enough for me. My projects will get resurrected sometimes a year and a half later. They'll say....can you just make the wheels bigger? And they'll expect it to look the same with a few hours of work total. That's great, but that's not so easy if you have to convert the old file into a new one.

Also my cost estimate wasn't for an upgrade. I just purchased Vray 2 last month, so get Vray 3 for free with 2 nodes. I wasn't aware of that upgrade page though.

you dont 'convert a file', you just open it and render. it's not like all of a sudden all your colors/brightness will change.

that 6 months is so you dont have to install 3.0 right away.

I got a quote for $690, which includes 5 nodes.

It will change a bit...not drastic, with stills you will be ok, some color tweaking in Photoshop may be needed...but if you need to re-render part of an animation plan on re-rendering the entire sequence it will not match!...believe me already been there.

              1. Vlado + chaos army + forum
              2. Longer support and more active
              3. More color correction nodes for render
              4. Faster brute force render
              5. More user friendly
              6. Univied vmat shaders - u can move all of ur projects straight to maya and back.
              7. Progressive sampler - big speed up
              8. Progressive based RT CPU = one of biggest features so far - u actually get to use fog and more complex set ups with RT !
              9. Render passes from gpu/cpu = u can actually use ur GPU for production !
              10. And more more more more...
              1. does not pertain exclusively to 3.0 and is irrelevant for production
              2. Only support I ever needed was getting the initial DR nodes going and chaos group was unable to solve it. Google solved it though.
              3. Photoshop
              4. don't use brute force
              5. great for new users!
              6. Maya? um, yeah, not in our pipeline
              7. Don't use it
              8. requires a new graphics card on our end so more $$$
              9. see #8
              10. ? still, no compelling reason to jump on the new release

Personally, I appreciate all the forum help, and they'll soon be talking about things in 3.0 that do not exist in 2.4. So, because of this, once my plug-ins work I'll move to 3.0.

The new render mask options are superb for arch viz - makes it so easy to selectively re - render any aspect of your scene without wasting any compute time on areas of the scene that you don't need updated. I am seeing 20% speed increase just by clicking on Embree. The new lens effects are also another time saver. I've barely scratched the surface and I love it already...I'm also very interested in the brute force speedup, even for arch viz. Not long ago I did an exterior animation with moving objects (people cars etc) and using brute force greatly simplified the work flow - so i will definitely be using brute force again.
