So, after watching all these new workflow videos, it seems Brute Force and Light Cache is the recommended way to render. Currently, I have an exterior scene with 3000 trees, 1000's of flowers, with a lot of displacement. My question is, are you using BR+LC for these kinds of scenes, or are you having better success with IRR+LC, like in the old days?

These 'new workflow videos' are basing the use of BF on the assumption that render time is irrelevant.

I think that they would not agree. The pitch is, it is faster and better.Bobby Parker

isn't that in comparison to the universal method? it's significantly faster than working like that used to be, but I still don't think it's the fastest method (and we're yet to install vray3 for me to test)
The point is that it's quick to get going and you can trust it (without it taking anywhere near as long as BF/BF in 1.5), rather than testing over and over.Last edited by Neilg; 19-03-2014, 11:28 AM.

I guess it is a predictable workflow, but for my exteriors with lots of vegetation, I haven't gotten it to be a good solution. But, I have been told, that I must be doing it wrongBobby Parker

If you'd watched the Grant Warwick videos you would have heard him mention numerous times that render times are still higher but for the type of work he's aiming his tutorials at, this is a trade-off worth making.

....as I recall the method it's mainly for interior and not exterior because of all the vegetation - but I could be wrong.

I believe it's more to do with the fact that IR works well with exterior scenes due to the abundance of light available but darker interiors usually fall prey to IR splotchiness. BF doesn't fall prey to this but instead has inherently more noise.

I'm trying to push a large scene through using BF+LC, but it's not going well.Bobby Parker

Lots of VRayProxy trees with Light Cache can ramp up memory usage in my experience.Maxscript made easy....

In my opinion, exteriors with 3d grass, trees, displacement, etc... BF+LC it isn't a good idea.
Because LC is good for complex GI situation. and outdoor rendering isn't a complex for GI.
In exterior rendering, usually, we have 2-3 light bounces. So, why to use LC?
Also, LC can use a lot of memory in this situation (a lot of geometry)
BF+BF with 2-3 bounce (maybe post noise reduction) it could be a good solution IMO.
Also, in the new VRay 3.0 BF is very fast now.Last edited by cecofuli; 20-03-2014, 10:33 AM.
