When I hit render, my model saves first. I have autosave set up for every 30 minutes. But, when things crash the only thing I have is when I manually hit save. Why the heck am I waiting 1 1/2 minutes for the autosaves when it is doing absolutely nothing!

Are you on a network windows account? The autobac is written within the user/username/3dsmax/ folder which can be a problem on network domains. I had to redirect the entire projects folder to a different place on the HDD to be able to write the autobac's. The ini-file with which you can change this setting is located in Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2014 - 64bit\ENU or whatever version of max you have installed.

interesting and good to know. My project data folder has my incremental backups, but not those auto ones. I am on a domain, so I will look into it. Thanks.Bobby Parker

I don't remember the file auto-saving when I hit render. Does it always do that? Maybe I have never noticed.Bobby Parker

gotcha. I guess when you are trying to shave every second, which is the name of this game, you realize where time is coming from. Each time I stop/start, it takes 1 1/2 minutes to save.Bobby Parker

xref's and proxies generally render slower for me, so I am not sure it is worth it. I have enough RAM, so I rarely have to use proxies.Originally posted by Dariusz Makowski (Dadal) View PostConsider using xreds and referencing as much as you can in ur scene... I got my scenes to weight around 1-2 mb and its very fast to work this way...Bobby Parker

One other thing to look at is File Compression - Compress on Save.
I used to use it because it effectively zips things, and saves file about a third or a quarter of the size of without. Trouble is it takes significant time to do this. Nowdays I just take the hit on disk space, as saving to an SSD is vastly faster.
A scene that is 300MB saves in 6 seconds uncompressed, and takes 18 seconds when compressed down to 80mb.

Yes. I do compress on save. I'll turn that off and see it helps. ThanksOriginally posted by davexl View PostOne other thing to look at is File Compression - Compress on Save.
