  • Wood Shake Roof

I am starting a monster house and it has wood shakes on the roof. I do a lot of roofs, and with some awesome script I can do pretty good, but I don't have a workflow for wood shakes. These are the un-even kind... any tips?

make a huge flat sheet, and either duplicate, normal align it and cut to fit or if you're not going with geometry render it from top to create a diffuse, ref, normal & disp map.

You can achieve this quite easily with Railclone

it's a very complicated roof, and I don't have time to learn a new plugin, so is it worth pursuing? Cubicleganster, I am not sure I understand your suggestion.

Make the roof out of flat polygons. have a big sheet of the roofing detailed up as one edit poly with mapping baked in which is bigger than any of the roof segments, then copy that, use normal align & the cut tool in top view to trim it. If you do the material using a multitexture and use material by element you can randomize all the tiles easily.

Have not used these tools myself so I cannot say how they would work for what you need, but they are made for it:

I use Displacement Roof Surfaces all the time - love it!

I always remember being impressed by the shingles (geometry) on this 'making of' article http://www.ronenbekerman.com/making-...nedict-chapel/

Maybe it's a method you could adapt for your purpose. Creating those large sheets and then using slice at the ridges, valleys and eaves.
