  • Vray rendernodes - universal usage question across platforms

    Hi Chaosguys,

i ve been wonderign about vray rendernodes versatility.
    Questions is:

    1. Is it possible to use vray rendernodes which we will buy not only for rendering under MAX, but also for rendering with MAYA, provided we get some maya workstation licences too, to be able to utilize the same number of rendernodes as we use for MAX?

    2. If not, is this planned for the future?

We do character animations from time to time and as you probably know, MAX sucks for doing that. For that we need MAYA as for some other things.
We tried Alembic, but unfortunatelly the trial version only supports 1 object per ABC format and the newest version 1.5.4 is not supported by MAX at all.

It would be really cool if the vray rendernodes were universal.

    Thanks for the reply

The actual software that renders will have to be different (a 3ds Max slave in one case and Maya or V-Ray Standalone in the other), but in terms of V-Ray licenses - once V-Ray 3.0 for Maya is released, you will be able to use the same licenses regardless of which particular V-Ray product you are rendering with.

      great stuff Vlado , thanks!

how will this work when it comes to instalations?
I suppose our workstation and render nodes for MAX will stay intact and we will have to install new rendernodes for MAYA right? (along with 1 MAYA workstation licence of course)
With that being said, i suspect that the dongle file would have to be upgraded in order to see all the render licences yes?

Yes the dongle will be updated after you've purchased Vray 3.x for Maya with at least one workstation license and the number of render licenses you bought (1,5,10).
The new render node licenses will be added to the existing ones and you will be able render with them on each Vray 3.x product (Max, Maya etc...)
