Anobody have tested vray in a dual opteron box? I´m planning to get a new machine and think that spending money now in a xeon dual is not a good idea (32bits processor, more expensive)
I use Vray on dual opteron and works fine here !
We are waiting for the 64bit update of all the softwares...
It will be long before we use all the potentiality of the opteron...
So be sure, you want to get something you wont use at 100%
well, i just wanna add a point here... the fact that some
people are running dual processor with no problems so far
does not mean that it is certified ok.
as we all know, problems and glitches surface with different
kinds of 3d scenes / lighting / materials.
i now have confirmed for a fact that my hyperthread machine
does give higher chances of splotches. not all the time.
in fact, i thought it was some of the usual problems that caused
my splotching. but upon reading someone's post suspecting HT,
i did a check. confirmed its the HT machine that has this problem.
disabling HT in bios helps the problem to a large extent, but
some scenes in my problematic file still display splotches..which
when rendered in a non HT machine, is perfectly fine.
thot u might wanna know since HT is kinda like dual processors?
my two cents,
like gafl said, it will be a long time until you can use the full power of a 64bit cpu. I would pick up prestonia xeons, dont wait for the noconas (they are too hot / prescott core). Get the asus pc-dl deluxe (canterwood chipset for dual xeons ), put some ddr-ram on it and enjoy the HT under Vray. I bet you'll outperform a opteron with that system.
i still dont get this whole HT thing. ive got a dual HT machine here that never crashed, froze or gave blotches.

stupid questions the forum can answer.
Dual Xeon 2.8's here and a 3.0ghz P4 both with HT on and no issues for a few months now with max 4, 5 and 6 with V-Ray.

6x 2xeon 3.066 under xp pro with ht
without great problems
-10 frames looks strange
-experience just about 5 time strange freasing rendering
for me 2xeon 3.006 was the only solution to finished my work in time

we have 14 athlon 2000-3000 on our renderfarm and we have more problem witht them than with the 2xeon
