We use both Xeons and AMD MPs in Multiproc. PCs.
I have to say that the new AMD MPs with 2800 can't beat a Xeon with HT, which is nearly 20% faster (yes it's sad!). Well, price is the main reason why we still use the AMD, but we will change to Xeons in the future.
As we did tests in the past, 64bit was never a great deal. It looks more like the pure raytracing is based on 32bit, don't know why. The last test with G5 showed it clearly a 2 Ghz G5 is nothing better then 2 Ghz P4 (even 10% worse), well didn't say the G5 glaze in other tasks, but defently no rendering Processor at the moment. I think it's a little better with the opteron, because it's architectur is more open to 32bit and to 3d-acceleration.
so, keep testing...
regards,
robert
