Definitely. Not surprising really, given that it's the first core-bump for many years on a consumer chip. Value-for-money it will probably still come in somewhere very nicely when set against the equivalently-priced Xeon setup.

I would look for dual six core for sure. You can certainly get the xeon x5650 in that price or better. You need many cores because you render. Any 6 core xeon will be faster then its 4 core counter part.

If you are interested in xeons, look for t5500 workstation that has em. I have two from ebay and they are amazing.

well its a quad core still. Look for six core duals. They are more rare but you can find.

consider shipment costs as well. I think its a bit high but that's just me, you'd have to hunt around for a killer deal. I got a t5500 dual six core with quadro 4000 for $1,200

yup this is excellent price imo. I'm not sure about video card in this one, but you can always buy a better video card!

thinking about it some more, you may not be able to fit a fat geforce card into those cases they are very tightly spaced. But quadro 4000 fits there for sure I got one.

I am ready to pull the trigger (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Precisi...p2054897.l4275) This will by my only workstation, so I'll have to be an optimization master. 36GB of RAM, enough?

I manage to keep all my work under 24 gb. In rare cases I need to go over, like dealing with hair/fur or sims. For what you do, the plugins these days are good enough to manage the memory with in that criteria. You should be just fine! its a great price for a machine like that, also comes with ssd!

Lastly, you can always upgrade the ram. I recently did so 64 gb of ram for $350.
