I am weighing out some options... I noticed that it would cost $185 per month to lease 3DSMAX and $190 a month to lease V-Ray. Is it strange that a plug-in cost more to lease than the software you use it in? However, to own 3DS Max it would be $3675 and $1,040 for V-Ray. If V-Ray is 1/3 to own, shouldn't it me 1/3 to lease?

Vray is priced the same world wide with currency adjustments (lovely people!), 3dsmax on the other hand is not. It's about 5,500 dollars for 3dsmax for me in Ireland or about 350 a month. The us just ends up getting very cheap pricing on autodesk stuff

I don't see why.
Autodesk and ChaosGroup aren't the same company, nor the two softwares are used for the same goals, or on average for the same amount of time (for example, consider the amount of man hours spent within a DCC app to prepare a scene for rendering, versus the amount of time vray renders what's been prepared.) in a given production.
Add to that the "law of demand", the actual small amount 190$ is (half a day of freelance wage, in the US? I am guessing.), and on queue to this the fact that for 60$ it's probably better for Chaos to not bother at all with licensing and support (which is given, and very personably so at that, even in the case of a lease) and I don't personally see the grounds for a lowering in price, by any stretch of the imagination.Lele

It cost more to lease V-Ray than 3DSMAX and V-Ray is 1/3 of the price. So, the leasing option for VRay is a lot higher. 3DSMAX is at 5.04% and VRay is at 18.27%
Right or wrong, that is what it is. Now, a $52 a month sounds lovelyBobby Parker

But, there are different needs. Freelancers are typically one man shops. However, one project a month should cover the software expense.
VRay = $190
3DSMAX = $180
Photoshop = $9.95
$379.95 a month for the bare bones to do what I do. Probably a lot more for others, but not less.Last edited by glorybound; 20-08-2014, 04:15 PM.Bobby Parker

Ooh! What might be interesting is say you've rented vray for a total of 6 non continuous months during a year, what'd be cool is if they gave you the option of paying something like 200 dollars to then get a permanent license. 520 dollars a year is pretty damn cheap for rental too if your main profession will always involve rendering - 45 dollars a month?
I reckon the one month license rental is designed for studios that bring in a load of firepower for a month to finish off a job and since the setup and support cost for a licence is a fixed cost it has to be proportionately higher if chaos are only getting one months income out of it. It's not really designed for someone that's renting the license over the course of a year.

We are also not very well equipped technically to handle temporary licensing; if/when we implement an option for easy online licensing, things could be different.

Also, Autodesk and Adobe very much want to push everyone to rentals and subscription models so this further justifies a lower rental/subscription price. We offer this as an option in case of temporary need for more licenses, but it is not a goal to keep everyone on this type of licenses. Ouch! You need to lease per 10 node bundles! Now, that doesn't help at all.Bobby Parker
