  • recreate metal ray shader in V-Ray

    Hi,

I have Maya scene file from client, for some reason I need to create it's mental ray material in 3ds max with V-Ray. So in the Maya scene file, the material was created with mental ray "Surface Shader" and "Shadow Shader". And in the "Shadow Shader", they put "parti_volume" in it.

So, my questions are: how do I recreate the material in V-Ray in 3ds max? Since there is no slot for Shadow Shader in V-Ray material...how can I recreate the concept of it? And I would like to know what's the counter part of "parti_volume" material in V-Ray.

    Any suggestions are welcome!

Hm, what does it look like? The parti volume shader is just a volumetric fog shader. Technically, you can use a V-Ray override material to specify a separate material for the shadows that has a V-Ray environment fog shader as a volume shader.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

      Hi Vlado,

Images attached are screeshots and rendering of the material in Maya. The rendering is beautiful and quick. Thanks for your suggestions.

        Hi Vlado,

what is the counterpart of Volume shader slot in VRay? cause in mentalray you have volume shader slot, I couldn't find it in VRayOverideMtl.

the volumetric fog shader can only be apply in Environment/Atmosphere, not the VRay material in general.

Is there any ways to get around it?

There is no such slot in V-Ray, use VrayScatterVolume material instead:

Can we download a scene with that frozen logo somewhere to see how it's done ? More generally it would be extremely useful to have such example scenes available within the documentation, to illustrate each feature.

We are sorry to inform you but we are not able to provide these scenes.

tks svetlozar, I will try that later.

BTW, instead of using volumetric shader, I figured out that VRay translucency (soft model) with refraction "Use interpolation" checked, will get the effect i am looking for. here is my results:

Well, it creates a volume shader under the hood anyways

                  Best regards,
