  • FastSSS2 vs glossy glass

    Hi,

    Pretty basic question I'm afraid.

I've just started working on a medical job where they're using VRay 2.5 and I'm experimenting with the fastSSS2 material.

I've been asked about creating a material for organs which shows the structure of arteries etc inside (sharp at the surface, but softer inside), but I'm not having any luck with the raytraced refractive scatter mode.

The best approximation I've found is by using the standard material with glossy refraction, so I just wanted to check if what I want to do is actually possible with the FastSSS2 shader or if I should be using the standard VRay Material.

    Thanks,

    Steve

You should be able to do it with SSS2 material. Just put veins texture in the right slot (that I dont know which one is...) and just use illimiantion mode or other ones for testing. Should be quick to preview and ull be able to find it fast, maybe?

      Hi,

I'm not sure that will do what I'm looking for - the veins need to be inside rather than on the surface.

See attached pic, but using the FastSSS2 rather than the Vraymaterial.

      Thanks

Are you modeling the veins or doing them as a texture?

I assume the former based on your sample rendering. I am not an experienced with SSS at ALL, but I doubt it will work since I think it's intended more for translucency and you need actual (albeit fuzzy) transparency. I think a refractive glossy material makes more sense based on your needs.

I could definitely be wrong though. Possibly you could use a VrayBlend to get the benefits of both -- but render times would probably be hellish.

          Hi,

yeah it would be all modeled.

I've got part of the way there with the VRaymat, but it doesn't have the nice translucent effect of the SSS2 material, and nothing I've done with the translucency settings in VRaymat has matched it yet.

          I'll give VRayblend a try.

          Thanks

Get the look u like in SSS2 then take it to vrayblend with screen mode enabled. Then set vray material to black refl/diffuse and set refraction to be IOR 1.001 and glossy it up and play with settings. Should give you the effect you are after.
