  • Disappointing DOF

Finding it very hard in 3.0 to get clean DOF without crazy render times. It used to be I could raise the DOF subdivs and get clean results without too much impact on render times. Now, with that control gone I have to raise the max subdivs on the entire scene. This is very frustrating. Is there something I'm missing?

It hasn't changed. your scenes are probably different.
In the old versions of vray, when you switched dof on the AA settings didn't do anything - the dof subdivions became the max aa. it's just been moved now so there aren't redundant controls.

What you need to do now is to separate the control from Adaptice ctrl. So tick on in the AA area the checkox to control AA independently of adaptive and then adjust it like u did in past dof.

Also try a lower min shading setting (like 1) to concentrate more samples on DOF vs. shadows or glossiness.

I've done/tried all these things. Still crazy slow. Or at least it seems slow to me. It could seem slow to me because I've been testing Octane lately. Hard to jump back and forth.

            Hi smashley!

If you miss the physical camera DOF subdivs parameter you can still tweak it with maxscript. It is just hidden from UI as Neilg mentioned.
            Code:
            $VRayCam001.subdivs=10

Neilg is right, a duplicated control is just removed, but you can send us your scene and we will try to optimize it, if its possible.

I thought its now hardcoded to the max AA so even if you change it with maxscript it doesnt do anything?
Same with LC number of threads, you can change it as much as you want but it's hard coded to 64?
                Kind Regards,

You could try using shade maps, they can be a good bit faster if you have to have in camera DOF. Or else check out bokeh from peregrine labs. Its a nuke plugin and does require deep exrs. not as good as in camera DOF but the results are far better than your average 2d z depth blur.

It took me a really long time to get the hang of this, but once I started getting it and making good progress I wouldn't trade it for the old system at all.
