  • Big Rendertime differences between Vray for Max/Standalone

After years of using Vray on Max I started looking into the Standalone to be able to render on Linux.
One thing that seems weird is the speed differences that I'm getting.

Here's the actual scene I want to render:

    Vray 3ds max - Rendertime: 2mins

Name:	GloboMaxVray.jpg
Views:	1
Size:	352.4 KB
ID:	881676

    Vray Standalone - Rendertime: 2,50mins

Name:	GloboVrayStandalone.jpg

Size:	354.3 KB
ID:	881677

You can spot a few differences in the two images probably due to conversion (FOV, Noise Maps, Colours, Lightcache interpolation around Objects) but I don't see why Vray Standalone should take almost a third longer than VrayMax. I build up a small test scene then to figure out if there are particular features that make it slow (maybe noise maps) As it turns out a very simple render with NO textures will give something very similar in rendertime - start adding (simple) things (texture, noise maps, etc) and Vray Standalone takes a much bigger hit than Vray for Max.

I wanted to know if I'm missing something obvious or if it's just the case that Vray Standalone is slower.

I've no idea; it would be best to get us a scene to profile. Recently I found a difference because a larger number of meshes in the .vrscene were exported as dynamic geometry (due to a lower triangle limit), but I'm not sure if this is the same as your case.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

First thing I have noticed is the camera zoom is different. Stand Alone is zoomed closer. And the Shadows on Stand Alone are much better quality? Seen particularly where the grass blades are. This suggests to me that the Stand Alone is doing more work.

It might be that some particular parameter is not translated properly; but it would be good to look at the scene.

Hey Vlado. I just sent two scenes (the full scene and a benchmark scene) via Mail.
          Thanks for looking into that!

Shadow quality for the larger shadows looks about the same imho.
It also looks like the standalone is rendering the grass blade shadows too dark, and not refracting them like in the max version. (If that actually is refraction, and not some other effect making the shadows squiggly).
