  • Gamma Settings for Bump and Glossiness Maps

    Dear all,

    I know that one should use the gamma override 1.0 setting to use a normal map properly in Vray, otherwise it would distort the surface reflection unproperly.

    But does this apply also to heightmaps, bumpmaps, specular maps or should you use there the automatic setting (2.2) that you use also for diffuse maps?

    Doesnt make as much of a critical difference, my use of those maps is arbitrary and dont usually end up with full contribution so I change it based on if I want the map to be light or darker with more or less contrast.

        So if I wanted to use a "technically correct" approach (regardless of the fact that we are all adjusting the settings until it looks good), one could say that all maps that control features like bumpiness, anisotropy, displacement, roughness, glossiness, and not directly contribute to the image, should be read with gamma 1.0, while maps like reflection color, diffuse color, emissive color on should be read with gamma 2.2 (if they are not .hdr or .exr). Is this correct?
        I am looking for this "technically correct" approach, because I want to find an automatism to apply scanned materials, where the scanner scans also maps like glossiness, anisotropy, specularity. After doing this approach, one could still tweak the settings, if the result is not satisfying.

          Yep that's it - so a value of 128 (8bit) would be 50% reflective. And if you used the same map with displacement set to 20mm then it will displace by 10mm.
