  • GGX/Blinn/Ward and VRayEdgesTex

    Hi,

As I read in the help section and experienced myself, using the new EdgesTex in 3.3 as Bump in a GGX/Blinn/Ward shader leads to edge artifacts.
Can we get a fix for this ASAP? I don't know why it happens but it's a major argument against using it, at least in our pipeline.

I was so hyped seeing this but noticing that downside is like a punch int he face for me.
I'm sure there are reasons why this isn't implemented yet, but I urge you guys to get high up on the priority list.

Any response from CG here would be much appreciated on when/if we can expect a fix.
Apart from that I'm really blown away (in a good way) by the new stuff in 3.3! Nice work!

Do you have any example pictures of the edge artifacts you are speaking of? Because personally I haven't encountered any problems yet.
    Cheers,

do you have "fix dark glossy edges" enabled in the vraymtl? other than the dark outline at the back (which could be a result of your environment) i dont see any artifacts?

There definitely are artifacts, like I said its even in the help section on the EdgesTex:

"Currently, when used as a bump map in glossy materials with Blinn or Ward BRDF, VRayEdgesTex may lead to dark edges; to avoid this, use the Phong BRDF instead:"

And I have it disabled with all of the BRDFs.

Edit: My environment is what I thought first but since it doesn't happen when I use Phong BRDF with EdgesTex I am sure that it is the issue talked about in the help section.

you have "fix dark glossy edges" disabled? does enabling it not help?

              Doesn't make a difference.
I heard somewhere that that checkbox has no effect afterall in GGX

I don't have a fix for this at the moment, unfortunately. I have no idea when it will be fixed or if it is fixable at all. I will be able to tell you more after we've done some research on the topic - which will likely take a few months at least.

                  Best regards,
                  Vlado

Ok, so I was wrong, it took about 30 mins There is still some darkening at the edges, but much better than before.

It will be implemented for the next 3.30 patch.

                    Best regards,
                    Vlado

WAY better - thanks! Looking forward to it!
Do you have an ETA on the next patch? (I know, I know... something like "days", "weeks" or "months" would suffice )

The remaining darkening at the edges could be seen as lighting/reflection changes in the environment, so that is rather not an issue I guess.
