Progressive for animation?

  • Progressive for animation?

    Hi all

    Some quick questions:
    Can I use DR for progressive?
    Can I use Backburner with progressive?

    How will this influance animation if there are machines with different specs? For example if I set noise to 0.02 and maximum time 15 min, if I send that to farm with different specs, will it be a total mess?
    In other words an i7 rendering a frame and a dual XEON rendering a frame with 0.02 and 15 will be totally different?

    Comments or suggestions welcome!

    yes and yes, although i believe adaptive still has a speed advantage in some instances.

    you dont want to set a time limit though, as obviously the slower machines will do a worse job in a given time.

    best is to set a noise threshold
    , then a max paths of something high like 30,000 just to make sure nothing gets too oversampled (the sampler isnt perfect and sometimes puts too many samples in little difficult areas)

      I would assume that it could be a bit of a mess. If the noise threshold at 0.02 is not resolved at 15 min on one node but at another, you will get more noise at the slow node because it will stop at 15 min regardless of your noise threshold. I pretty sure that the maximum time takes precedence over the noise threshold.

      So stick with the noise threshold, methinks.

        Yes this is what I'm worried about.

        I'm however limited by TIME and BUDGET and will be using a farm for this. Just trying to see what will give me best render in least amount of time. 15 min a frame is about as good as it's going to get.
        With the defaults but AA adaptive 2,24, and nooise 0.01, I get an acceptable test frame in just more than 1 hour. If I do a progressive test (on a single pc) and do couple of frames at max 15 min, it's actually acceptable quality for this particular project without flicker but specular flicker a bit, will look into it (couple thousand frames)

          so you work out what noise threshold gives the same quality as your 15 minute test frame, and set that as the noise threshold, and kill the time limit.. that way all the machines will give the same quality. with a time limit you -will- get flicker if rendering on different spec machines. . in 3.3 the vray info window thing actually tells you approximately what noise threshold its using at a given moment, so watch that

            where do I put max paths? isn´t this in rt only?

              The progressive sampler has the max. subdivs instead of max paths, but the principle is the same.
