  • How does VRayDisplacementMod works with instances?

    Hi,

If I got 400 instances of an object with VRayDisplacementMod on it, how does it work?

Will I get proportionally more RAM load? Only when distance/pixel based subdivision is active? Will it change when I do world units based displacement?
    Just curiosity.
    Software:
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
    3ds Max 2016 SP4
    V-Ray Adv 3.60.04

    Hardware:
    Intel Core i7-4930K @ 3.40 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 (4096MB RAM)
    64GB RAM

I was curious about the results of this setup and did a quick test. So the memory usage is quite high without optimization. By optimization I mean bucket rendering with brute force or/and Irr map GI to take the advantages of the dynamic geometry and have more control by adjusting the Dynamic memory limit value.

V-Ray will replicate each instance and displace it separately.

If you need to save RAM, it might be better to use the 3ds Max Displace modifier.
