Even our Houdini guys come back to 3dsMax or Maya for non-sim/non-procedural stuff.
Yes, you "can" do anything. But, can-do-in-time is a different story.

I think this way. If you think pflow box#3/TP/MCG is not for you, then your alternative would be C4D or Modo, not Houdini.
For sure I will get back to max too until I am a perfect master of Houdini which will takes many years. I work in max since 20 years and I still don't know everything. I learn Houdini in my spare time since 1 year only so there will be numerous occasions I will be back to max not because Houdini is slower but just because I'm slower in it for some specific tasks.

My point is that I think it takes less time to master Houdini than max and its zillions plugins, even though Houdini will feel slower to learn at the beginning and even though Houdini can do far more. And nothing prevent you from using both softwares while you master it.

    • That is funny. Also, it cost each user about $1000 to fix something that they broke.

        My point is exact opposite.
I have seen many Houdini artist. But, the one who truly knows/master Houdini is really hard to find.
Many of them had years of experience and big movie credit, but they were still very limited.
To utilize full power of Houdini, you need to remove all the sugar coat which other "easier" program has.
While Houdini is node based program. You still need tons of expression in the node.

            • Played with SP3 for a few hours yesterday on a relatively complex scene and, fingers crossed, no crash so far.

                      • I'm happy to hear that it works with no major issues now that SP3 is out. I might try it myself too.

                        • I am still getting my 1-2 crashes a day, but that seems to be extremely normal. I would say that it is the most stable release for me, so I am happy.

                            • If MAX freezes for more than a few minutes, I'll kill it. Sometimes I wait and it will come back to life, but sometimes not. Moving too fast will crash it sometimes, too.
