  • converting selected objects materials or lights

is there a way to do this? i want to convert my scene which has lights i dont want to convert also but it seems to be converting all at once, only solutions so far was to save out those lights or objects and then import them after converting, any way around doing this and just doing it selectively?

The conversion scripts are applied to the whole scene so far, so the only option to convert specific objects only is to export them into a another scene, convert then and then merge them back.

Yeah that really doesnt make sense for large scenes, especially where there are tonnes of materials and objects, i really have to do this but corona is the only other renderer i use and it has this out of the box, we need this for vray

That's not quite a logically valid step.
It's a preference of yours, down to your own workflow, and limits thereof.
It takes seconds with a properly setup scene, no matter its size, to split it in sub-files, and convert those, and then bring them back together.
In fact, it'd be advisable for huge scenes to do so by default, and reference the bits in.

This said, i have not read the code, but i am sure adding a "convert selected only" option is within the realm of the doable.
But personally, i would not want it to work like that at all: nothing would be more painful for your scene to be converted in bits, and some bad shader or light type to stay as it is.
That stuff, invariably, would end up on the Support's desk (for size, search the forum for the issues a blend or a shellac or a normalbump create.), and the converter's aim is also to cut that down by insuring a converted scene is indeed wholly V-Ray compatible.

actually that is what i have been doing all along but i had a 100 mill scene recently with a tonne of objects (few people working on it) and in different parts of the scene i knew where the objects were that i wanted to convert, issue is alot of the objects that were in the scene were hard to select entirely and send out to convert in another scene because they were just many many parts without good naming, also i wasn't the only one working on it so i couldn't just convert all objects not knowing how the other materials were setup because not all my scenes are using all vray materials for different reasons, also many of the light fixtures in the scene were grouped with the lights inside, some using vray lights and other not, sometimes the groups themselves existed in other groups which was a slow process to even open all the groups themselves which is just my pc not being able to handle it all so would have been nice to just select that patch of objects i know about and say convert selected, and it takes alot more than seconds to send out and reimport, sometimes leads to hours of work, i sometimes myself dont have time to properly group and name things etc and i rather just throw things in to make it work so the problem starts there for sure. so yeah its all preference to have this option but it would be a really nice option to have. No one has requested this before?

eh, not to my memory, no.
That isn't to say it wasn't requested, though.

There was a a request from James Burrell recently to convert only camera's or whatnot. So people are quite eager for a similar option. Vlado chimed in on the whole object selection thing: This is the thread: http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...nvert+selected

ahh nice find Vizioen, these guys maybe explained it alot better than me but also we want the same thing, some assets i have also use standard materials and they work ok so no need to go in and tweak it which saves a tonne of time, it just makes sense
