  • Vray RT Animation Preview (3.40.01)

We're attempting to render a quick preview using the "Render Vray Animation Preview" but we're hitting a few issues and I'm unsure if it is something that we have overlooked...

    1. Forest pack renders incorrectly - looks like a distribution scale issue (This is working fine in vray rt production)
    2. xRef'd scenes don't render (working fine in vray rt production)
    3. It appears to be defaulting to cpu & I can't spot any way to change this? (current assigned renderer is vray rt production with Cuda selected - FYI. if I add a denoiser pass before rendering then monitoring via gpu-z shows that the gpu's kick in when the denoiser goes to work)
    4. Nothing seems to get saved out? (tested with the defaults C:\Users*\Documents\3dsMax\renderoutput\ to avoid user error - file / folder permissions are fine & logged in as admin - is there a minimum number of frames; using start 0, end 1 to test the saving output but we're at frame 5 at the time of writing?) Also, seen as though render passes are rendered when using "Render Vray Animation Preview", can we feature request multipass exr as a file output option?

Hopefully someone can shed a little light or advise an alternative method for quick prelim animations (gpu)

RT animation preview takes the RT settings from the ActiveShade - this could be causing 2 (xrefs are off in the RT ActiveShade) and 3 (CPU is set as render engine in RT ActiveShade).

About 1 and 4 I will need a scene (peter.matanov@chaosgroup.com). When testing I've noticed that we've overlooked the denoiser+RT animation preview scenario - each frame is saved before the denoise operation - this will be fixed.
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

Thanks for the clarification Peter - I hadn't even considered that activeshade was holding the key Possibly a little bit of documentation or even a tooltip in the ui would avoid any chance of confusion in the future?

I've sent you a gdrive link to the file, let me know if you have any issues downloading etc. Cheers

Seems I don't have access to the file - We're sorry, but you do not have access to this page.

I've launched successfully the animation preview, but I don't see anything animated in the scene (CUDA and all checkboxes checked in RT ActiveShade). Am I missing something ?

Ah... It had a few animated camera paths in there, but there currently being reworked & must have been removed from the file.

Either way, for the purpose of testing points 1 & 4 I would assume that a static scene would work just the same?

Nope - no FP scaling issues (I'm on latest 5.0.7beta) and the output seems saved properly. Anyway, I will test it some more.

Hmm... I'm just going to re-test again now. FP version is the same, the only thing that I haven't tested yet is switching across to activeshade from production.

Without testing I know what the FP issue will have been.. The main grass element is a proxy object & they would have been deselected in the activeshade config.

Still unsure on the saving issues we were having though. I'll be back soon with the result.

                    Cheers

Hi peter. After adjusting the activeshade settings all seems ok. Thanks again!

Actually - why do you use this tool ? Why not just output your animation preview through RT as Production ?

Peter, this tool can be very useful when wanting to quickly preview animation in a case where the final production render will be rendered with Vray Advanced and you don't want to take the the time to completely change the Production renderers around, back and forth.

Not a huge thing, but every now and then this is a big help...

                            Thanks,

                            -Alan
