    I can't speak for Maya as I've never used it but in Max I've found that probabilistic lights to be a bit finicky and even with many lights the results are not as good as rendering without this option. I found myself always disabling it even with hundreds of lights as I get cleaner results with no perceivable slowdowns. Probabilistic lights does allow for faster render updates with progressive sampler though if you're doing test renders with many lights and you're not concerned about the quality so much.

      Yes, I agree, except I think on these scenes I never touched them and they must have helped. Then again, they were inside the "stores" and so probably was not too important as to how they played in the scene, but in general, I turn them off, they use to produce fireflies. I can't tell anymore if this is the case as I have not used them in such a long time.
