VRay Bend vs. Max Blend with non-tiling mask

How does one get the VRayBlendMtl to behave like the Max Blend Material when using masks that don't tile? The attached screenshot illustrates my frustration.

Set the blend colour to black/white to suit. Default is grey, so outside of the mask, its blending at 50%
