  • Displacement Bitmap and Real World Scale

Am I correct that if using a 2D Bitmap in the map slot of vray displacement modifier than real world scale cannot be used/does not work?

Example - a 48" x 48" x 48" box with a material using a black and white checker diffuse map is applied (square map with 4 equal size "checkers"). A UV Map modifier is applied with "box" mapping. Set the material diffuse map to "Real World Scale" and set the UV Map modifier to "Real World Scale". Set "Real World Scale" in the material diffuse map and UV Map modifier to be 24"x 24". So far so good. Add Vray Displacement modifier and add same checker map to modifier map slot. Instance map to material editor and check "Real World Scale" and set to 24" x 24". The resulting displacement does not look correct. It looks like the displacement is being applied at a 1" x 1" size.

So .... "Real World Scale" does not work with Vray Displacement Modifier?

Thanks for any reply, I'm just confirming this for my own knowledge. Maybe a wish list for future Vray version?

    Hi,

Real world scale should work fine with V-Ray displacement modifier in 3D mapping mode, but not in 2D mode. Which one you are using for this setup?

Hi and thanks for your reply. I am using a black and white jpeg bitmap on 2D mode.

My understanding is that using 3D mode requires using a procedural texture and is more computer resource intensive.

Would it be advisable to use the 2D JPEG map in 3D mode? I am working in arch viz and usually use displacement for things like stone, brick, siding, roofing often in conjunction with jpg diffuse texture maps.

Yes, you can use 2D JPEGs with 3D displacement mapping, that setup will ensure proper calculation of displacement even for objects with Real Worlds Scale mapping.
