BTW Vlado, you said that Histogram in V-Ray VFB was supposed to be means of high dynamic range compression in V-Ray.

Did you mean levels by that? I just tried it and I am not having any luck. There are just two points. I just clicked the black point and moved it, and now I can not move it back because DPI of my monitor is not high enough for it to sit exactly back at 0.00, and there does not seem to be any way to input values manually or some hotkey to reset it back, aside from reset settings option. And white point seems to do just exposure, there is no way to add more custom points or anything like that, I tried all various hotkeys and combination.

I just don't see any way how levels could be used as a means of HDR compression

EDIT: Nevermind, Ctrl+Click, but not on gradient, below it. Also works only when Levels are actually enabled, yet there's no indication of UI being frozen. A bit confusing indeed

Fantastic! I wouldn't ask anything more.

Not sure how much resource Vlado needs to pull to work on this, but can't users go use a dozen of this kind of app (hdrlabs link) outside of VFB already? Not that I don't like the convenience and saving $99 bucks...
          always curious...

Yes, of course. But a) $99 bucks is a lot money for some people and b) based on the comments here, most people (or at least those that post on the forum) really hate to have to go to another application and c) in a world where people choose a renderer solely because it has better tone mapping or lens effects, it's not something that can be ignored

            Best regards,

As silly as it sounds when you put it like that, that's the world we live in.
And you just know, that when the vray version with that eye-candy tonemapping comes out, your marketing guys will use it as a big selling point.

                  That's perfect, indeed.
Something similar to Picturenaut, as Vlado suggested(in a previous comment), would be ideal and I would love something like that.

In fact, something like that could be like the most advanced tonemapping that any render engine on the market has at the moment. It would be really cool and a big step ahead of any other competitor.
I'm sure something like that can come with a few presets as well(one of them could be Filmic or whatever - or we can do our own presets).

The most important aspect would be to be able to export an .LUT file from it(be able to export the custom preset we have made in it), so we can import it afterwards in the compositing software of our choice.
This way we guarantee a perfect transfer of image looks from the VFB to our compositing software.
Why am I looking for that? Because I might want to apply different adjustments to the high dynamic image(like object masks, etc.) in the compositing software before applying that LUT / tonemapping.
                  I hope it makes sense.

P.S.: Valdo has confirmed that an .LUT file could be exported for any adjustment we do in that tonemap.

I'm just looking forward to time scales for the implementation of this new thing.
I guess Vlado just got himself a new challenging task to do for us. We can only cheer on the side and offer some moral support in the meantime

wait, but saving LUT from VFB is possible for quite a long time now. like for example moving reinhard compression to photoshop.

thanks everyone for your help however we couldnt get it to work.. .tight deadline so we just downgraded back to 3.4 as we were really happy with the work flow and ease of use so for now we are going to just stay at 3.4.

                      Kind Regards

You will have to update sooner or later, so you'll have to figure out your workflow eventually. If you need any assistance, you can email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com
