  • Car Texturing

Hi everyone - today I finished my second car model and I am very much satisfied with it. Thw bad news is that I CANNOT texture it with vray. I desperately need some help because the same thing happened with my first model and it is still wip.

I have read a lot of tuts in the forums how other guys did this but actually I can't get what I want. So, right to the problem - I want to use HDRI and I actually managed to put the car paint on the main car compartment (can't upload images because of my f....n location - i don't access to a fast server. Anyways, I put 1 spot light and the HDRI map. Do I have to take care of the environment before I start putting the textures of the different accessories of the car? I am asking this, because I put the car paint on black environment and then when I put let say a sphere and a hemisphere around and all of it changes the looks. Also the aluminium and other metal materials and reflector mats that I have from famous texture libraries from this forum always take the color of the surroundings(because of the reflection they have) and not let say a specific metal look like they are supposed to.

I am sorry about the so long message, if someone can give me some guidelines or some help how to texture a car, I will be very grateful. Or if someone can texture it for me, but I don't prefer this because I want to learn.

    Thanks very much

The thing is with reflective objects: car paint different metals, even different type of plastic, the look of them all depends on the surroundings..

So what you have to do is to deside what "look" you want, and then try to figure out what kind of surroundings you need to get that look..

Well Tom is right, as Tom´s are allways right. Right ?

the secound thing you need is a good reflectiv material. you need fresnel reflection or if you have a metalic material, an blend material with two vraymat in the slots. one with a clear fresnel reflection and the other with a blurry reflection for the underlying metalic look.

Here´s a example we did some time ago. material as described and also a hdri for the surrounding reflections in the reflections override slot of the vray renderdialog.
