  • 3ds Max 2017/2018 crashes

    Hey,

    I know this is not the right forum because this is a "max-only-problem" - but I really need help

    I?ve got the following situation on 3 Workstations:

    > all 3 Workstation running with Windows 10 (Pro/64bit/build 1703)
    > on all 3 Workstations 3ds max 2017 and 2018 is installed
    > all 3 Workstations have the same GPU (Nvidia GTX 1070)
    > one Workstation got a Intel 7700K CPU - the other both are Ryzen 1700

    and now the problem:

    If i use the BodyObject-Utility on both Ryzen Workstation to adjust several selected BodyObjects (imported from a step-file), 3ds max 2017 and 2018 crash without any Error-Message. With the Intel Workstation everything runs as expected.

    To fix the problem, I?ve tried the following things:
    * reinstall new versions of c++ redistributable
    * reinstall 3ds max (both version) with different updates installed
    * reinstall gpu drivers and use different versions
    * reinstall windows 10 and use early builds
    * use different bios versions
    * use different gpus

    ... and nothing helped!

    I would be grateful for any advice/confirmation/negation.. anything!

    Cheers!

    Can you give me more specific reproduction steps so that I can try this here on our Ryzen system?

    Best regards,

      Hey Vlado,
      thanks for your response!

      The steps are:
      1. import step file as body objects (convert to mesh off)
      2. select several body obejects
      3. use the "Body Utility"
      4. change the "Mesh Quality Presets" from "Medium" to "Coarse"
      5. Max crash without an error..

      Cheers!

          So this seems to be a bug in 3ds Max; I'm not entirely sure why it shows up on Ryzen but not on Intel. It would be best to report it to Autodesk. I also generated a crash dump that you can attach to the bug report here:
          https://ftp.chaosgroup.com/vlado/3dsmax_body_utility.7z

          The actual crash is reported as "Unhandled exception at 0x00007FFF03CDA420 (Body_Tools.dll) in 3dsmax.exe: Stack cookie instrumentation code detected a stack-based buffer overrun."

          Best regards,
          Vlado

            Thanks so much for your feedback - especially for the dump. I will open a bug report at autodesk with your dump and reported message.
