  • Computer CPU Question

I know there's lots of posts on asking what spec is the best for Vray rendering. Im looking to upgrade my workstation and im trying to work out for progressive rendering and IPR CPU would a higher clock speed single core machine like an i9 be better than a dual xeon e5 or e7 ?

better as in faster or better as in pixels an hour vs dollars? in any case the AMD CPU's are the best at the moment.

Ok thanks.Just trying to understand if a fast single chip is better for progressive rendering or would more cores be faster to clean the image ?

Both are important. V-Ray scales well with multiple cores though, you can also check the V-Ray Bench results here.

ultimately more cores is better for rendering no matter how you look at it. But you can count the clock speed of all the cores for any given cpu and multiply them by core count and get total Ghz, for example intel core i9 7900x is 10 cores with 4.3 Ghz at max clock speed (under load) so its 43 Ghz total. The intel xeon e5-2699v4 has 22 cores at 3.6 ghz so total 79.2 Ghz so that's almost twice as fast and you can seat two cpus on a xeon board so you can have 158 Ghz and that speed is awesome. You can't have two i9 on one board. Of course there is also a huge price difference between xeon and i9 too

Lastly, the single i9 will outperform xeon in the single threaded operations, so there is more benefit of it for doing actual work (besides rendering).
