  • Backburner problem

I've only used backburner once - just to see how it worked. I ran a test job at the time and all seemed to work great.

Now I'm wanting to try it on a project. When I start server. it can't find manager. Any ideas why?

because you need to have the manager running

Yes - manager is running on another PC. I fired off a job from VIZ and it showed up correctly in the monitor. The second machine (the one running server with the error) was not included.

Server reports that it cannot find manager, but it is running.

      Some more info:
      dynamic IPs
      workgroup
      Windows XP Pro on all
They ping each other fine, share folders, internet, etc.
They are on the same router

any firewalls in place? try removing them

try switching to static IPs and connecting by IP address instead of by name, if you don't have a Windows Domain/Active Directory running - working by Machine Name can be quite problematic

well... IP assignment is handled by the router, and they have never changed. I'm not connecting by machine name, I'm doing it by IP.

I have ZoneAlarm running on both PCs, plus the router has a firewall. But access has already been granted in all, and backburner worked fine last time I tried it.

I will try killing all firewalls just in case though.

          Thanks for the ideas.

are you setting the ip of the manager or letting the server search, maybe try the opposite of what you have set.

i had a problem with zonealarm for a while...even though i had opened up access and had it working at one point...try just disabling zone alarm - you shouldn't need to disable the router firewall unless your backburner traffic is trying to go through it

when it comes down to it, if you are worried about incoming traffic attempts, you dont need zone alarm if the router firewall is functioning properly

                rerender-
I've tried automatic, machine name, and IP. Same results.

                dynedain-
I know you're right in theory about firewall. But I still see the occasional incoming ping. Could be from another PC here I suppose. I'll try killing zonealarm.

Another part of my question, assuming I get BB running
I've come up with a render setting I like using QMC+LM. Is this something that will animate well? (ie - no flicker, etc.) If so... does saved lightmap work with BB? Any other tips?

                Thanks!

Restarted machines and shut down ZoneAlarm. Still not working.

vray DR works fine, so the computers can see each other and get along. It has to be a backburner problem, doesn't it?

                  Any other suggestions appreciated!

Understood. vrayspawner is turned off now in order to use backburner.

Only reason I mentioned it is to say that the network is functioning, computers see each other, etc. Which to me means network is ok, computers are ok, vray is ok. Problem most likely is with viz or backburner or one of their settings.

try using another machine as the manager. See if this narrows your problem down to the current machine that is running the manager. Maybe that machine needs to have viz reinstalled.

WRN Could not find a Manager. Will keep trying.....

This is what I keep getting regardless what I change.

And for these types of problems, where there are alot of possible problems, and limited time to get it fixed, you may want to jump into the IRC channel. alot of the people who post frequently here are there for some real time chatting.

Didn't know there was an IRC. Can you point me in the right direction?
