  • Convert to tiled EXR

I have a small bathroom that has extreme render times; I am talking 4+ hours. I am troubleshooting and converted my scene to tiled EXR's. I didn't expect anything, but my render time is now under an hour. I didn't do anything else, except run the tool. What exactly happened and why doesn't V-Ray do this automatically? Are there are some downsides.

You set your texture blur parameter to 0.1 in most cases do you? Likely that, I find the default vrayhdri settings make the bitmaps softer so the less contrast there is in a texture (especially things like glossy / reflection strength / bump) means less subpixel detail for vray and then adaptive sampling gets to kill off earlier.

My problem is after I convert my scene it crashes when I try to render it.

Have a look at what your memory is doing perhaps? Or if you set the vraylog to use a higher warning level so it lists bitmaps as they load, it may give you a hint as to what map is causing it?

I didn't know you can change that, where? I sent the file to support, maybe they can figure it out. The bathroom worked, it's another scene that crashes. The bathroom went from 4 hours to less than an hour. I was hoping my 2-hour kitchen would render in 1/2 hour.

I set warning levels to 4 and I don't see anything that is useful. Since this is a double post, I'll post updates on the other thread.

I don't have particular insight into the problem, but I'm curious about your workflow. Are you using EXR (tiled or otherwise) for all textures? Or just for an environment map / dome light? I've been having good luck with regular Max bitmaps and JPEG, etc. but always looking for improvements

I use regular bitmaps and an HDRI for my lighting. I read a thread about how fast renders got when converting everything to an HDRI, so I tried on a bathroom that had long render times. It worked on that one and rendered 4X faster.

huh, I'll have to give that a try. I use a similar approach and sometimes see render times that are longer than I would expect. Good tip!

It changed all the bitmap loaders from the Max vanilla version to VRayHDRI, thereby improving filtering performance in both quality and speed. Yeah, it can be by that much, too.
As to not doing that by default, well, some may want to keep max bitmaps for compatibility with other engines.
It's a click, click, wait affair, though.

                      Interesting read!
Is there any fast way how to set all the blur values in bitmaps to a certain value? I am sure i woudl probably find something on the web but is there a way how to force Vray to do this without any 3rd party tool?

                        Code:
                        for m in getclassinstaces vrayhdri do m.coords.blur = 1.0
