  • Computer Freeze

    Okay, I am having a hard time with computer freeze. V-Ray continues to render, but the screen, mouse, and everything else is frozen. I can't CTRL+ALT+DEL or anything. I just finished one view and it froze for 39 minutes, 1/2 way through the render and then poof, it's done. I have MAX set to low-priority, but it doesn't matter. This has been happening ever since NEXT.

    MAX 2019
    Windows 10
    VRay NEXT

    Is there anything I can do? No displacement or anything else complicated in the scene.

    I ended up hard rebooting my PC since it was frozen for about an hour, and the second time around there wasn't any freezing.

      if its such a bad issue try working with HT off. (HT - Hyprethreading.) I know its a bummer but it might be better for you.

        You know, when DELL tries to optimize my machine for 3DS MAX it does turn it off. I'll have to see what happens.

          Really? I thought it can only be done in bios?

              Did you try the environment variable VRAYNUMTHREADS Bobby???
              I had these freezes and it helped.

                I already have more threads than V-Ray sees, but let me see if that helps.

                  I have a System variable VRAY_USE_THREAD_AFFINITY and the Value is 1. I have 2 processors, each with 18 cores and with multithreading, I have 72 cores. What should I set this at?

                    Vlado wrote about this some time ago but there are different threads about it and some are quite misleading about what to do.
                    you need to run environment variable for your windows user (or whole system up to you) and make a new general environment variable VRAYNUMTHREADS=X where X is all your THREADS minus lets say 1-2
                    Save it and youre done you wont get it anymore and if yes, raise the number of threads you deduct. So if you have 36 threads, you shoud type VRAYNUMTHREADS=34
                    try this

                      Precisely an example of a discussion Lele and I had the other day. If you are a new reader and search for a topic you'll get ten different people to tell you ten different ways to do something; you'll go batty!

                      Does this include multithreading? I have 36 cores, but 72 when multithreading is on, which it is. So, in my case would it be?

                      VRAYNUMTHREADS=34
                      or
                      VRAYNUMTHREADS=70

                      My only other question is V-Ray already tells me that I have more cores that V-Ray will use, so I should already have a few left over, no?

                        yep you should have a value 70.
                        However its weird that vray is not using only those 64 threads allowed.
                        strange

                          Yeah, I get the warning that it won't use more than 70 cores

                            Sure bur if you dont use more than 64 and still have 8 left then why the freezes. It doesnt make sense.

                              Yeah, changing it to 70 cores didn't make a difference, it's still freezing.
