  • 3DSmax Hair and Fur (WSM) not working properly anymore

Hair and Fur (WSM) was usually working nicely with VrayHairMtl, along with the mrPrim setup described in the help files, but now it seems buggy

I saw that it's advised to use geometry mode after max 2015, but somehow it's not rendering correctly with Vray Next (render the hair like big tubes, like if the taper doesn't work)

    (Setup is 3DSMAX 2016 SP4 + VRayNext 4.02.04)

Images below to show the problem

Am I missing something ? Since VRay Fur (object) is unfortunalely lacking the features of Hair and Fur (WSM), we have no workaround and our older fur objects are not rendering anymore.

Can you send me a scene for this?
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

      Sure, here is the scene.

Switch between mr prim and Geometry/ buffer in effects to see the difference

Problem might start to appear at certain hair count (50k is already showing 'tubes')

        I don't see a problem with mrPrim.

Indeed, but mrPrim has some limitations

Incorrect mapping since MAX 2015 (advised to use geomtery mode)
(see the last parapgraph here) : https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...d+Fur+Modifier

And doesn't work when XREFed (not solved AFAIK)

          Thanks for your help !

Those tubes that you are seeing in geometry mode are produced by 3ds max, meaning we have no control on their shapes.

The incorrect mapping is a Max issue and I suggest you contact Autodesk to give it more weight.

About the Xref one, I believe it's not fixed yet, but it should work fine with other 3rd party hair plugins.

As you may know, contacting ADSK for bug fixes is a waste of time and we are not investing in another 3rd party plugin for 3 rugs and 2 cushions.

I just hope that the XREF bug is logged somewhere at Chaos and will be fixed eventually, because the workaround is cumbersome.

Thanks anyway for looking into this.
