It's also labelled as WIP, and as stated, very optional: the traditional approach is still all there, choice is still available.
It'd be trivializing Next to state the Adaptive Dome was all it provided (and it remains questionable to say it's a deal breaker, even in its current state.), but of course it's entirely your choice how you'd like to spin it, and how close you'd like to look at Next.Lele

Its nice to have options - at the end of the day all I want is to do good work, I don't mind if a feature is "physical" or not. After all, we're making computer pictures. But if those check boxes break other features? Back to unphysical - What about affect specular/diffuse amount? Do you use vray plane lights?

They're bugs, not unwritten rules.
Whether they're fixable or not is a question i can't answer.
It is true, however, that we could have chosen to say "this works only under these circumstances", and called it a day, but you know Vlado... ^^Lele

Adaptive dome looks way nicer than regular dome light. But in this case I wanted even more light coming through the windows. So I cranked up the intensity. Illumination looked great, but reflection was too much. So I disable reflections and make a less intense duplicate that only affects reflections. Kind of the same as Affect -diffuse -specular variable. That's what I was trying to do. Another way, I suppose, would be to work on the HDR in PSD, but I have very little knowledge on how to do that. Looking for the fastest path to nice imagery. Which is why I *love* the new IPR. Game changer!

Could it be that your materials are too reflective?
Reducing the reflection amounts would work. And probably render faster.
You could use this ancient script from lele to change the reflection amount of all your materials:
