  • Poor Compact Material Editor Performance

    Hi,

For me this has been a problem for 3 or 4 years now and seemingly gets worse with every 3ds Max release. When the CME slots are all populated with VRay materials, simply selecting different slots exhibits pretty sluggish behavior in the CME UI. The rollouts may take up to 3 seconds to actually appear. Opening the render settings dialog also takes 3-5 seconds to open when VRay is set as the default renderer.

So recently I did some testing... I installed 3ds Max in a Windows 10 VM. Material Editor performance when switching between material slots was fast. It was taking maybe 500ms for the rollouts to redraw after switching slots. Opening/closing the render settings dialogs also was fast, maybe 1 second to open after clicking the toolbar button.

Went back to my laptop and performed the same tests. ME slots take maybe 2-3 seconds to redraw the rollouts after switching. Opening the render settings dialog takes 3 seconds. So I closed 3ds Max and renamed my 3ds Max profile directory to eliminate VRay as being the default and restarted. This time switching ME slots was fast and opening the render settings dialog was fast, about 1 second. So the difference?

I use VRay exclusively, so I have 3ds Max setup to always have the ME populated with VRay materials, and the render settings dialog always has VRay as the default renderer. As mentioned before, I've seen this behavior for several years across different versions of 3ds Max, VRay, and different workstations. These tests suggest there is a significant performance hit in the UI when using VRay.

I was told that the VRay rollouts have not yet been updated to match the rest of the 3ds Max UI tech, thus a performance hit is to be expected. Why hasn't this been done?? This to me seems like a pretty high priority... much higher than moving around map slots which IMO adds no value when you have to wait extra time to see the rollouts update.

Bump... does no one else have this issue in 3ds Max?

Bear in mind, the material editor materials need to be rendered as well. From what I understood, this issue is happening on your laptop, so it is possible that it's because of its performance capabilities. You did mention having this issue on other workstations, was this recently? I tested it also, with and without V-Ray as the default renderer and found no visible difference whatsoever. You can also investigate if the issue is happening because of a third-party script or plug-in.

Hello, yes currently the issue resides on my laptop, but I have noticed this on previous desktop workstations from about 2 years ago before I moved to a laptop. It should be fairly capable though. It's a Dell 7720 Precision workstation laptop with the P4000 NVidia card. I have tested on a fresh install and got the same lag. Also just rebuilt the OS on it to rule that out. I don't know how VRay integrates with the material editor; so is the issue potentially more related to 3ds Max or VRay?

After some investigation, it seems the issue is 3ds Max related. We'll see what we can do on our end.

Yes, update 2 fixes most of the issues around the drawing of old-style UI controls.
Give it a try, and let us know if your case is covered as well.

Yes, it is better now after 5.2 and 2022.
