I have a scene where I'm trying to render a few selected objects, including a white background. If I use IPR, it looks great, but when I go to do a production render, the background renders as black. Super annoying. No matter what I try, I can't get the background to render like it should when using Render mask Selected.

Presuming you're using the IPR debug shading to isolate the objects, yes, the background would be there. Render mask selected, however, works in a different matter and is meant for other procedures (i.e. re-rendering a specific object on-top of an already completed render), You can render your scene with the black background, take the alpha and use it as a mask in a simple composition with a white background
