Did you try saving to a vrimg, then restarting max and opening the vrimg back up to save out to something else?
This problem just happened again on a colleagues machine. I tried to do as you suggest, but there doesn't seem to be a 'save to vrimg' button unless I am missing something.
The vrimg save option is in the Frame buffer rollout. The image is saved per bucket as the rendering is happening.
Seems to me you might be running out of memory. If the image is as big as it seems to be (9600x4800?) there probably is not enough continuous memory left for max to create the bitmap buffer to save it. Your best bet would be to render directly to a vrimg file, and maybe even without any of the memory framebuffers turned on. If this is the problem it will thankfully be gone when max goes 64 bit
